Blood-borne Pathogens

Bloodborne pathogens are infectious microorganisms in human blood that can cause disease in humans. These pathogens include, but are not limited to, hepatitis B (HBV), hepatitis C (HCV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Needlesticks and other sharps-related injuries may expose workers to bloodborne pathogens, many of which can live outside the body for weeks. (www.OSHA.gov)

Can My Employees Clean It Up?

  • You may be putting yourself and employees at an unnecessary risk.
  • A job may appear to be complete and sterile but biohazard might remain.
  • Untrained trained/unprotected employees risk spreading biohazard through the facility on boots, hands or clothing.
  • Biohazard/Needles must be disposed of correctly.

OSHA Federal Regulation 29CFR1910.1030 states that no employee can be placed in a position to be exposed to biohazardous waste without first:

  • Receiving blood borne pathogen training
  • Having a written BBP exposure plan
  • Having been provided with personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Having been offered the Hepatitis B vaccine
  • Being provided with a method to remove and properly store the biohazard waste in properly marked containers for disposal at an approved site.
